چکیده

W e resolve in the aff irmative a question of Boppana and B u i : whether simulated annealing can, w i th high probability and in polynomial t i m e , f ind the optimal bisection of a r a n d o m graph in Gnpr when p r = O(n*-’) f o r A 5 2 . ( T h e random graph model Gnpr specifies a “planted” bisection of density r , separating t w o n / 2 v e r t e x subsets of slightly higher density p . ) W e show that simulated “annealing” at a n appropriate fixed temperature (i.e., the Metropolis algorithm) f inds the unique smallest bisection in O(n2+‘) steps with very high probability, provided A > 1116. ( B y using a slightly modified neighborhood structure, the number of steps can be reduced t o O(n’+‘).) W e leave open the question of whether annealing i s effective f o r A in the range 312 < A 5 1116, whose lower l imit represents t he threshold at which the planted bisection becomes lost amongs t other r a n d o m smal l bisections. It also remains open whether hillclimbing (i.e., annealing at temperature 0) solves the same problem.

SIMULATED ANNEALING ALGORITHM FOR SELECTING SUBOPTIMAL CYCLE BASIS OF A GRAPH

The cycle basis of a graph arises in a wide range of engineering problems and has a variety of applications. Minimal and optimal cycle bases reduce the time and memory required for most of such applications. One of the important applications of cycle basis in civil engineering is its use in the force method to frame analysis to generate sparse flexibility matrices, which is needed for optimal a...

Hill-climbing Nds Random Planted Bisections

We analyze the behavior of hill-climbing algorithms for the minimum bisection problem on instances drawn from the \planted bisection" ran-is one of the few problem distributions for which various popular heuris-tic methods, such as simulated annealing, have been proven to succeed. However, it has been open whether these sophisticated methods were necessary , or whether simpler heuristics would ...

A new Simulated Annealing algorithm for the robust coloring problem

The Robust Coloring Problem (RCP) is a generalization of the well-known Graph Coloring Problem where we seek for a solution that remains valid when extra edges are added. The RCP is used in scheduling of events with possible last-minute changes and study frequency assignments of the electromagnetic spectrum. This problem has been proved as NP-hard and in instances larger than 30 vertices, meta-...

A Recurrent Network with Stochastic Weights

Stochastic neural networks for global optimization are usually built by introducing random uctuations into the network. A natural method is to use stochastic weights rather than stochastic activation functions. We propose a new model in which each neuron has very simple functionality but all the weights are stochastic. It is shown that the stationary distribution of the network uniquely exists ...

Partitioning of unstructured meshes for load balancing

Many large-scale engineering and scientiic calculations involve repeated updating of variables on an unstructured mesh. To do these types of computations on distributed memory parallel computers, it is necessary to partition the mesh among the processors so that the load balance is maximized and inter-processor communication time is minimized. This can be approximated by the problem of partitio...
